Russian wood ‘disguised’ China through Vietnam to avoid US sanctions

A new report by the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) finds that Russian birch wood is “disguised” as products from Asia entering the US despite US economic sanctions against them. with Russia because of the invasion in Ukraine.
An investigation by EIA, a UK-based non-profit monitoring organization, found that most of the birch wood products currently being exported from Vietnam to the US originate from Russia.

The report shows the “roundabout” route of birch wood from Russia to the US through China and Vietnam, in which Chinese companies import Russian wood and then repackage it and export it to Vietnam.

Vietnam is the largest wooden furniture supplier to the US in recent years. According to statistics from the General Department of Customs, Vietnam’s exports of wood and wood products to the US in the first seven months of this year reached $9.7 billion, up 1.1% over the same period last year.
