Stocks fell around the globe amid fears of a rising property crisis in Asia and USA. Dow futures fell over 500 points following losses in Europe and a 3% drop in Hong Kong stocks.

Investors are also awaiting a Fed policy meeting that starts tomorrow which may offer an update on the central bank’s tapering strategy. Government bond yields have been rising with the 10-year Treasury touching a two-month high ahead of the Fed meeting. Later today the National Association of Home Builders releases its Housing Market Index for September that is expected to fall slightly from August.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warned in a Wall Street Journal Op-Ed that the U.S. must avoid a debt default, urging Congress to act quickly to raise the debt ceiling. Yellen said the country risks an “economic catastrophe” sparking an “entirely avoidable” crisis if Congress doesn’t act.
