There were big waves in Waterford as Storm Eunice made landfall

A man has died in the Republic of Ireland after being hit by a falling tree during Storm Eunice.

The man, who worked for Wexford County Council, was clearing debris caused by the storm when he was fatally injured.

It happened in the Ballythomas area of County Wexford, close to the border with County Wicklow, on Friday morning.

It is being treated as a workplace accident and the gardaí (Irish police) and the Health and Safety Authority have been informed.

In a statement, Wexford County Council expressed "deep sadness and regret" as it confirmed the man's death.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the employee's family, work colleagues and friends at this very difficult time," the statement added.

Storm Eunice made landfall in the Republic of Ireland on Friday morning, with Met Éireann issuing a number of red and orange warnings for some counties, which have now been lifted.

A yellow snow and ice warning for the entire country has been extended until 10:00 local time on Saturday.

High winds
There are about 80,000 properties without power, mainly in Cork, Kerry and Clare.

Parts of Cork and Kerry were hit by gusts of over 130km/h (81mph), with the highest gust recorded at 137 kmh/h (85mph) at Roches Point in Cork.

A total of 43 flights were cancelled at Dublin Airport, with further delays expected.

Ferries from Rosslare to Britain, France and Spain have also been cancelled.

The chairman of the National Emergency Co-ordination Group (NECG) in the Republic of Ireland told RTÉ that Eunice will be a "high impact, multi-hazard storm bringing coastal flooding, damaging winds and blizzard conditions."

Keith Leonard said the storm will be at the "upper end" of the winter storms, and urged people to stay indoors if they are in an area with a red warning.

Parts of Cork and Kerry were hit by gusts of over 130km/h (81mph), with the highest gust recorded at 137 kmh/h (85mph) at Roches Point in Cork.

In Northern Ireland, the Met Office has issued a yellow snow warning until 18:00 GMT.

Snow fell in the north west of Northern Ireland overnight, but the Department for Infrastructure said all routes remained open.

Falling trees kill three as Storm Eunice hits the Netherlands

Reuters

THE HAGUE, Feb 18 (Reuters) - Falling trees killed three people as Storm Eunice pummelled the Netherlands on Friday, damaging buildings and blowing off parts of the roof at the stadium of soccer club ADO Den Haag, authorities said.

The government sent out text alerts telling people to stay indoors and said they should only call emergency services in life-threatening situations. "The emergency number is overloaded," read the message.

Two people were killed by falling trees in Amsterdam, and a third in the nearby Diemen area, the city's fire department said.

"Do not go out on the street anymore. It is truly dangerous," the city's police force said on Twitter.

Schiphol airport cancelled about 390 flights, a spokesperson said.

Schools sent children home early and train were cancelled nationwide from 2 p.m. local time (1300 GMT). Several trucks were overturned by strong winds, disrupting traffic, Dutch traffic monitoring organisation ANWB said.

Images of a strip of roof hanging off The Hague soccer club's stadium circulated on social media.

Elsewhere in The Hague, police evacuated residents living next to church in the central Elandstraat whose dual spires have become unstable, ANP news agency reported. Videos on social media show one of the spires swaying in the wind as police cordoned of the immediate surroundings.

In neighbouring Belgium the centre of Asse, a small town north east of Brussels, was evacuated because of the risk of a church tower collapsing.

Eunice, an Atlantic storm, has been battering Britain and Ireland most of Friday, causing widespread damage and killing at least one person. read more

The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) issued a "code red" warning of gusts reaching up to 130 km per hour (80 miles per hour) in coastal areas.

Storm Eunice: BA jet almost flips over during Heathrow landing

Four people have died after Storm Eunice brought damage, disruption and potentially record-breaking winds to the UK and Ireland.

A woman in her 30s was killed when a tree fell on a car in north London, a man in his 50s died when debris struck the windscreen of a vehicle in Merseyside, and a man in his 20s died after his truck collided with a fallen tree in Hampshire.

The Met Office’s ultra-rare “red” weather warnings for extremely strong winds have now elapsed – but Eunice’s impact is set to continue.

Winds of 122mph on the Isle of Wight set a provisional record for England.

Snow has been causing widespread travel disruption in Scotland and northern England, forcing more schools to close.
